The Libertine

October 4, 2006

Three dudes from Dead Man’s Chest and the alluringly creepy girl from both Minority Report and Code 46 do a lot of talking in 17th-century London. Alas, it’s not as scandalous, shocking or historically informative as I’d hoped, but it does have a terrific grainy and fire-lit texture to it, some pretty rad costumes and hilarious understated dialogue. I’m thinking especially of the Frenchman sitting with King Charles II, watching the Earl of Rochester’s vile play, when he says, “It is very amusing because, in France, he would be executed for this.” If you don’t have an interest in the period (I just barely do, because it lives next door to the Elizabethan England I’m actually into right now), you might be bored here. If watching actors savor monologues and relish each other’s company is enough for you, though, this one’s worth watching.

Is Depp’s Earl of Rochester just Captain Jack Sparrow minus the Keith Richards? You tell me.
